Performers a hot commodity these days
by Darryl Mills Wednesday January 09, 2008 You know, I have to say, I was a little bit spooked by the events in Edmonton to start the year, with Rexall Drugs mogul Daryl Katz trying to convince the Edmonton Investors Group (EIG) to sell him control of the Edmonton Oilers.
The spooky part was that I wrote a tongue-in-cheek column early this year that perhaps an NHL arena should be built on the former Domtar site instead of letting Springwood’s big box development go full steam ahead.
I didn’t know at the time that Springwood bigwig Bill Butler was part of the EIG.
Now, Butler, a visitor to Cochrane who has gotten a rougher time than the Oilers do when they play in Calgary, has become chair of the group of 30 or so investors that own the team, and he is in no mood to sell to Katz for $188 million.
Hmm, that whole six degrees of separation thing -- spooky huh?
Well Bill, if things don’t work out in oil town, my NHL team idea could still work here!!!

The quest for stage talent continues both here in Cochrane for the Vision Theatre Players and in Calgary for Calaway Park.
First and foremost, Wendy Punter, director extraordinaire, is looking for men, who are proving very difficult to come by these days (darn NFL playoffs).
Anyway, with just weeks to go, a couple of men are still needed for the group’s next play -- “To B&B or Not to B&B,” written by former Cochranites (and B&B owners) Elsa Peterson and Mike Madsen.
The play is scheduled to hit the stage in March, so if you’re interested, or know someone who might be, contact Punter at 932-6921 or 932-9788.
Meanwhile, this Saturday is the big day for high school and university-aged performers to strut their stuff for a chance to perform at Calaway Park over the 2008 season.
The open-call auditions for young actors and dancers is Saturday from 12:30 to 5 p.m at the Metropolitan Centre, 333 4th Ave. SW.
Good luck to any Cochrane and area hopefuls who give it a shot.
As they say in show biz -- break a leg!
